CASA EN EL CLOT

Barcelona

Surface : 218 m2

Year of construction: 1930

Year of reform: 2021-2023

The house is located in a pedestrian walkway in Barcelona's Clot neighborhood. This is the complete renovation of a single-story single-family home from 1930, which was extended by an additional floor in the 1960s. The structure of the house reflects both eras: on the ground floor, high ceilings with a wooden beam structure and flat ceramic vaults; on the first floor, lower ceilings and a concrete beam structure. A patio and terrace complete the home.

When Marie and Mathieu commissioned us to build the house, it had been vacated and occupied for years. Discordant volumes occupied the courtyard, and the outdoor space was severely limited. The old staircase from the main house still occupied the right-hand dividing wall, but it no longer connected to any level.

The project aims to free the courtyard from its exterior volumes and the original staircase, leaving the space completely open. Inside, the vaulted and terrazzo staircase remains a focal point, and all the partition walls are demolished to design the new layout in line with the functional plan of a family of four.

The main entrance from the street returns to the center of the façade, respecting the original symmetry. In line with this, the hallway separates Pablo's bedroom on one side and the bathroom on the other, taking advantage of the lower staircase. A glass door leads into the living/dining/kitchen space, designed as an open-plan space composed of two connected rooms that appear to be one, thanks to the opening of a large gap between the two spaces, eliminating the original divisions.

The polished concrete floor occupies the entire floor and extends from the interior to the entire courtyard, blurring the line between inside and outside. A large folding window emphasizes this feeling.

Two rectangular and one circular cutouts are left on the patio floor for vegetation. The plants, chosen by landscape designer Ester Ribas for this project, colonize the walls of the space, their processes breaking up the stability and linearity of the interior. The lemon tree provides shade, and the patio becomes a Mediterranean garden.

On the first floor, Jeanne's bedroom and the master bedroom are located, the first facing the main facade and the second facing the patio. There is a full bathroom with an entrance from the hallway, and another with access from the master bedroom, respecting the boundaries of the walls of one volume of the original facade.

The master bedroom is set up as a large room that includes a small, quiet office overlooking the courtyard.

The floor is oak, the walls are white, and the wooden windows are complemented by roller blinds that ensure solar control and privacy.

The staircase volume is flooded with light through a skylight. The terrace is occupied on one side by the installations, and on the other by a relaxation area with plants and a table located in one corner, creating a small oasis amidst the city's buildings.
